BUILDING RESILIENT:X

2019

Fighting the trauma of the experience, alongside powerful feelings of disappointment and perceived failure, Max battled to absorb and process his ill-fated Atlantic crossing and near-death experience.

Through these months, one constant desire remained - an ambition to be defined not by what happened to him but by how he reacted. He wanted to set a precedent with his next move; a reaction that would serve as a guide he, and others, could follow in the future. He decided he would go back and take on the challenge again.

With Chris following a different path, Max asked Dave to reform their original team. The strongest of relationships built on immense belief in each other and their ability as a team to perform at the highest level.

And so, in December 2018, three and a half years since they first set this goal they rejoined to go back and face the challenge....

"Blending Max's experiences developing human resilience, Dave's career in strategy consulting, and the global trends and pressures, we wanted to build a team and a brand that represented all that we believe in and everything we have experienced."

Max on building resilience: "Following everything I went through, an intense period of self-assessment initiated adaptations that have made me a more resilient human being."

Dave on building resilient strategies: "As our climate comes under pressures from global warming and plastic waste, embracing circularity will enable individuals, organisations and societies to develop the self-sufficiency needed to be resilient and thrive."

Our Belief: "In a disruptive world of climate change, economic uncertainty, social upheaval and human vulnerability; adaptability and resilience are vital to thriving among it."

‘X’ represents each unique experience faced by individuals & businesses that requires resilience in order to thrive.

Our Mission: Leading through adversity, uncertainty and change with resilience.

OUR STORY

2016

2017

In July 2015, Max Thorpe and Dave Spelman set themselves a goal to row across the Atlantic Ocean in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. It’s easy to see why the epic 3000 mile, 40-90 day journey from the Canaries to Antigua is regarded as the ‘toughest race on earth’ with 24 hour-a-day rowing whilst fully unsupported. It was quickly clear to them both that this was the ultimate mental and physical challenge they wanted to test themselves against.

After Dave was offered a professional rugby contract in mid-2016, their pursuit of taking on the challenge was clouded by uncertainty. As Dave rightly pursued this unique opportunity, Max quickly recruited the only other man mad enough to take it on with him - Chris Williams.

After 2 years fundraising and training, Chris and Max departed La Gomera on the December 14th 2017 against 28 different teams from 18 different countries. Little did they know, they were heading into some of the worst sea conditions in over a decade. After a brutal 10 days, and over 1000km covered, they were leading the race and were comfortably ahead of world record pace.

Then, disaster struck. In the middle of the Atlantic, at exactly 23°38.00N, 25°14.53W, a huge a rogue wave caused an enormous capsize. Unprecedented in race history, the shattering impact ignited a fire on board their boat and so they faced a relentless and harrowing fight for their lives against unimaginable conditions. Their experience is now regarded as some of the most dramatic and perilous sequence of events in the history of ocean sport.

They did a TEDx Talk giving an insight into what they faced. Watch it below:
